Why Regular Eye Examinations Matter for the Whole Family

Did you know your eyes can show no pain or symptoms—even when something’s wrong? That’s why regular eye examinations are essential. They don’t just help protect your vision—they can also reveal early signs of wider health issues such as diabetes or cardiovascular disease.

Routine eye tests allow us to detect conditions like glaucoma, cataracts, age-related macular degeneration, and dry eyes early on—so we can take steps to prevent problems rather than simply treat them.

Your Eyes Matters

We recommend booking an eye examination at least every two years. You may even be entitled to a free NHS eye test if you are:
  • A child under 16 (or under 18 and in full-time education)
  • Aged 60 or over
  • Eligible under specific NHS or health benefit categories

Myopia

Myopia occurs when the eye is too long or the cornea is too steep, causing light to focus in front of the retina. Result: Near objects appear clear, but distant objects look blurred.

Hyperopia

Hyperopia occurs when the eye is too short or the cornea is too flat, making light focus behind the retina. Result: Distant objects are usually clear, but near work becomes difficult or strained.

Presbyopia

Presbyopia is an age-related loss of near focusing ability. It happens because the lens inside the eye becomes less flexible, usually starting around age 40–45. Result: Difficulty seeing up close, especially reading small print.

Macular Degeneration

A condition affecting the macula, the central part of the retina responsible for sharp, detailed vision. Result: Blurred or distorted central vision. Peripheral (side) vision usually stays intact.

Cataracts

Cataracts occur when the eye’s natural lens becomes cloudy, usually due to aging. Result: Blurred, misty, or dim vision, glare from lights, and difficulty seeing at night.

Retinal Detachment

A serious condition where the retina pulls away from the back of the eye. Result: Sudden flashes, floaters, a shadow or curtain over part of your vision. This is a medical emergency.

Floaters and Flashing Lights

Floaters: Small spots, threads, or cobweb-like shapes drifting across your vision. Often caused by natural changes in the eye’s gel (vitreous). Flashes: Brief flickers of light, like lightning streaks.

Dry Eyes & Dry Eye Syndrome

Occurs when the eyes don’t produce enough tears or the tears evaporate too quickly. Result: Gritty, burning, or tired eyes, fluctuating vision, or sensitivity to light.
